Ecus was founded 30 years ago and is a UK multi-disciplinary environmental consultancy specialising in environmental services including environmental planning and assessment, sustainability and environmental management. We have in-house specialist teams in ecology, arboriculture, landscape, green infrastructure, cultural heritage and archaeology, air quality and carbon. As a medium sized company we have the ability to really understand our stakeholders at a local level, along with the agility to efficiently flex and adapt to the changing demands of the market.

Role Overview

As a Senior Sustainability Consultant you will lead the on-time delivery and formulation of client projects and reporting through effective project management, accurate resource allocation and established quality controls. You will manage key accounts to ensure a great customer experience and sustainable business success and demonstrate successful results in tender responses, including methodologies, commercial costing, bid writing, and presenting in a timely, professional manner.

In this role you will contribute to mentoring and role-specific training to drive your own and the team’s consultancy skills. You will also contribute to the sustainability team’s growth by undertaking business development activities to achieve team targets. We are looking for an individual who has a proven track record as a highly competent consultant capable of dealing with complex business challenges and who exhibits commercial drive.

This role is based in and covers the UK, nationwide and may include opportunity for international engagement. The candidate will need to live in the covered area with the ability to travel within the covered area.

We are looking for candidates based in and around Edinburgh to work from our Edinburgh office but are open to applications from candidates across the UK to apply. We have eight offices across the UK in Edinburgh, Sheffield, Manchester, Bristol, Basingstoke, Exeter, Cardiff and Barnard Castle.

We operate a blended hybrid working model.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities:

  • Focused on inspiring customers by consistently meeting and exceeding their expectations
  • Empower customers with independent advice for sustainability and business success.
  • Contribute to the successful growth, innovation, and development of the business by:
  • Managing and growing a portfolio of customers which drives individual and team profitability
  • Collaborating with Ecus teams and collaborative partners to deliver contracted projects on-time and to the agreed standard
  • Producing technical reports for internal and external client projects which outline the approach, findings, conclusions and key recommendations
  • Contribute to leading strategy, growth objectives and delivery capabilities of our Climate Change and Sustainability team across both regulatory and mandatory frameworks (including but not limited to and including CSRD, ISSB, GRESB, TNFD, TCFD, SECR, SEC, GRI, SBTi, CDP, S&P Global, Materiality Assessments and Double Materiality Assessments
  • Securing new business through networks, customer contact and business development opportunities
  • Building professional networks and remaining updated with industry changes to ensure Ecus is delivering industry-leading value to customers.
  • Demonstrating knowledge, experience and understanding of sustainability, climate change, ESG, carbon emissions, net-zero, circular economy, social value, sustainable procurement and behaviour change.
  • Demonstrating competence with full range of current tools (e.g. carbon (LCA, footprinting, budgeting, ESG mapping software, etc.)
  • Delivery of complex sustainability projects, from initial risk assessment to implementation and reporting.
  • Translate sustainable business principles into tangible business outcomes, fostering value creation for our clients, with a primary focus on climate change and environment.
  • Supporting clients to design and preparing their sustainability strategies for operation. This includes setting targets, defining KPIs and frameworks for measuring and monitoring their impacts.
  • Analysing sustainability policies and developing roadmaps and action plans for clients.
  • Evaluating the climate mitigation and adaptation options for client projects towards Net Zero or carbon neutrality.
  • Proficient in following internal business processes and systems, including time recording, etc.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Familiarity, awareness, understanding, and experience in current and incoming sustainability reporting standards and frameworks
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline with a experience specialising in sustainability and ESG delivery, preferably within a consultancy environment.
  • Chartered membership of an appropriate Professional body [desirable but not essential]
  • Successful track record of contributing to the growth and development of a sustainability consulting delivery team in a sustainability services business.
  • Passionate about sustainability and have proven, relevant experience at a senior level, including helping organisations set strategies across the range of Sustainability/ESG Reporting frameworks.
  • Proven track record of securing new business from existing and new clients in a strategic way that adds genuine value and impact.
  • Direct line management experience and have ideally led and developed a junior and or mid-level consulting team.
  • Fluent and confident report writer with experience in technical reviewing the work of others and confident in understanding and applying quality and governance standards.
  • Effective project management, client relationship management and commercial skills,
  • Strong working knowledge and understanding of current and upcoming relevant legislation and requirements.
  • Effective use of MS Office package with a clear focus on higher Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint.
