The role involves undertaking research into the requirements of environmental compliance legislation overseas, confirming companies’ obligations and assisting with their compliance.

Overall purpose

This is an exciting opportunity to work within a growing department at the UK’s largest producer responsibility scheme. Valpak Consulting are recruiting a Consultant to help deliver projects to new and existing clients and develop new opportunities for the team and the wider Valpak business.

The Consultant will play a key role within Valpak Consulting, overseeing the identification, preparation of proposals and delivery of bespoke consulting projects for a variety of clients and identifying opportunities for Valpak to use their skills, data, expertise and system in new projects. The department provides a range of consultancy and environmental outsourcing options including but not limited to EPR Ready, packaging assessment and benchmarking, life cycle assessment, energy, carbon and compliance services, and domestic and global environmental research projects. Valpak Consulting’s suite of ‘PackFlow’ reports provide the primary baseline for packaging that is both placed on the market and recycled and are adapted and supplemented to developed unique insight to specific quires for Governments, NGO, representative bodies, and obligated businesses.

Clients may include UK Government and Governments of the Devolved Administrations and their appointed agencies (e.g. WRAP or Zero Waste Scotland), industry and industry representatives, as well as the Valpak Senior Management team, other departments within Valpak and the wider Reconomy Group.

Some travel, both in the UK and further afield may be required for the role.

What will I be doing?

To identify opportunities and prepare and present submissions and proposals to win business

  • Development of Valpak response to published tenders.
  • Identifying and developing leads and opportunities, both pro-active and reactive
  • Supporting the sales team in response to identified leads and opportunities, or where appropriate leading the response
  • Identifying opportunities to expand or sell Valpak Consulting projects and services
  • Identifying additional opportunities to deliver services to potential clients
  • Develop partnerships with existing or new sub-contractors

Project Delivery

  • Working with a small team of consultants and researchers, both as support and project manager.
  • Collection, measurement, and analysis of data
  • Working closely with project stakeholders
  • Using Valpak data to achieve successful project outcomes
  • Ensuring projects are managed in a timely and accurate manner and on budget
  • Working with partner consultants where required
  • Identifying additional opportunities relating to existing clients

Engagement and Reporting

  • Maintaining engagement with stakeholders (including clients) through the project process
  • Reporting results to clients using:
  • Formal written reporting (Word)
  • Powerpoint
  • Excel
  • In person and virtual presentation
  • Other appropriate reporting tools including client templates

Data/Scenario Modelling

  • Modelling economic and environmental impacts (e.g. CBA, LCA)
  • Grouping, scoping and analysis of data using excel
  • Identifying and requesting data from third parties
  • Submitting accurate and timely data to relevant parties
  • Auditing data
  • Ensuring accuracy and consistency of data

Account Management

  • Managing projects and being the first point of contact for clients within the department
  • Dealing with all relevant activity to ensure client satisfaction

Managing third party partners

  • Maintaining and maximizing relations with third party companies as required

Maintaining and developing market, industry and technical knowledge

  • Keeping Valpak and Valpak members informed of new and emerging opportunities within the compliance, packaging and carbon sectors
  • Identify and develop new projects in line with emerging trends or regulations and the requirements of Valpak customers

Fully contributing toward the developing the consulting service and associated sales and marketing

  • Working with Valpak marketing and Valpak sales team
  • Delivering content to promote Valpak Consulting

Attending sales and client meetings and other external events

  • Promoting Valpak Consulting to existing and potential clients.
  • Following up leads and opportunities

Key areas

  • Recent experience of leading work for an Environmental Consultancy on public and/or private projects.
  • A strong environmental background
  • Demonstrable expertise in economic principles and economic modelling
  • Knowledge of industry standards relating to LCA and Carbon Reporting
  • Understanding of how to measure the impact on the environment of businesses, products, and services
  • Understanding of the packaging waste regulations and associated data requirements placed on obligated businesses
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and keep to tight deadlines
  • High level of professionalism
  • Ability to work both within a team and independently

Experience, skills (desirable)

  • Experience working directly with packaging and packaging data
  • Detailed understanding of the producer responsibility compliance landscape
  • Detailed understanding of the role played by producer compliance schemes
  • IEMA membership or other relevant industry membership or experience
  • Experience of delivering consultancy projects within the environmental sector
  • Demonstrable numerical skills

Qualifications

  • Educated to Degree level, ideally in Economics (or equivalent) or appropriate mathematical or Environmental disciplines, or equivalent experience
