Principal Software Engineer

Based:

A mix of home & office-based working is available but you would need to be on-site a few days each week, therefore being commutable to Cambridge is important.

Role Overview:

This role would suit someone with aspirations to step up into departmental leadership in the future.

The Software Engineering function in Ultra supports the software development lifecycle consisting of requirements analysis, design, implementation, test and verification in order to deliver

software components into projects and products and supports the deployment and maintenance of software components.

A professional at this grade applies technical / professional knowledge, making independent judgements based on practice and significant previous experience to support decision making.

Often seen as a referral point or more senior team member to escalate more complex problems. Roles will act independently with minimal guidance, and may act as project managers/formal mentors for junior staff.

Purpose:

To support and lead software development and verification to meet

both the project and statutory requirements.

To improve the effectiveness of the software design function within the company.

This role is leading safety critical software development and verification and providing support to Engineering Manager (Software) in generation of schedules and estimates.

The role entails providing technical expertise and guidance to projects and lesser-experienced software engineers.

Scope:

Responsible for coordinating and planning the work for a small team of allocated engineers.

To act as delegated authority, as required, for the Engineering Manager (Software).

Responsible for effective leadership and utilisation of allocated resources in meeting milestones within cost.

Key Requirements:

* Support to Software Development and Leadership

Carry out performance appraisal

Contributes as required towards company engineering strategy

To help identify skills required within the team and support the recruitment where required

To help in identifying and implementing training and development needs for lesser-experienced software engineers

Monitor work performed by the team to ensure that high technical standard and quality is achieved within timescales and budget

To participate in ensuring the non-recurring costs for new products are defined and support to manage the engineering activity to ensure targets are met

To review and update , as required, engineering procedures to ensure they remain up to date and compliant

Support in Planning, coordinating and directing the work of other engineers

To provide, as required, technical supervision.

Assessing key areas of vulnerability in the software development and de-risking commercial outcome.

Strive to continuously improve the processes and procedures for Software development and Verification

Keep up to date with new developments, technology and tools within the market place to ensure the company remains at the cutting edge

Ensure adequate constructive challenge is presented in design reviews to identify and help mitigate any key issues.

Soft Skills:

Prepare presentations and reports as required for internal and external use

Help to build and maintain excellent internal and external customer relationships

To use initiative in progressing of the software development and verification tasks and in meeting milestones.

To be able to lead and motivate a multidisciplinary team of engineers to meet the project objectives

Flexibility:

Be prepared to travel to support current and future products on customers sites around the world (circa 1 week of international travel per year)

Support additional activities from time to time in order to maximise the contribution to Ultra Electronics Precision Controls goals and objectives

Experience:

Technical:

Real time software development in C.

Extensive experience of software design, development and testing in a safety-critical environment

Technically competent to identify risk and able clearly to present the detail

Able to suggest and apply practical and economic solutions to any problems encountered

Extensive experience with appropriate standards and processes in safety critical software development.

Able to communicate succinctly and accurately on most technical issues and schemes with internal and external customers and the team

Good application of Microsoft packages and relevant software for the role

Ability to lead and manage small size team and work packages

Specific Experience:

Proficient with configuration control

Proficient with design and analysis and test techniques for safety-critical real-time software.

Extensive experience with software development and verification lifecycle

Able and willing to participate and provide solutions in investigations resulting from aircraft incidents

Proficient in Technical Management of Safety Critical Development (to DO 178 Level A)

Extensive experience with all parts of the software lifecycle

Conversant with safety and certification requirements for aerospace software

Able and willing to participate and organise product investigations resulting from aircraft incidents

Desirable Experience:

Exposure and experience with some of the following is desirable:

Conversant with safety and certification requirements for aerospace software

Conversant with the responsibilities of an AR (Authorised Representative) /

Compliance Verification Engineer

Familiarity with electronic systems

Familiarity with system design practice (ARP4754)

Familiarity with system safety analysis (ARP4761)

Experience of Motorola and Texas Instruments processor families.

Qualification:

2:1 or above Electronics/Software/Physics/Engineering Degree or equivalent
